YEREVAN, July 6. /ARKA/. Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan signed a decree appointing Karen Grigoryan as Armenia's first ambassador to Pakistan, with residence in Abu Dhabi.

Grigoryan is Armenia's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the UAE and concurrently serves as ambassador to Pakistan.

Relations between Armenia and Pakistan

Pakistan has not recognized the independence of the Republic of Armenia, proclaimed in September 1991, for over 30 years, nor has it established diplomatic relations with the country. Among the reasons for Islamabad's position is its long-standing support for Azerbaijan's position on the Karabakh conflict.

As the Armenian-Azerbaijani peace process progressed, this barrier was removed: as early as November 2023, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that signing a peace treaty with Azerbaijan would serve as an argument for establishing diplomatic relations, including with Pakistan. According to Pashinyan, Armenia wants to establish friendly relations with all countries as part of a broader policy of normalizing foreign relations and advancing a peace agenda in the region.

On August 31, 2025, Armenia and Pakistan established diplomatic relations by signing a communiqué on the sidelines of the SCO summit in Tianjin. The document was signed by Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Pakistani Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

According to the Armenian Foreign Ministry, by signing the communiqué, the governments of the two countries expressed their desire to develop friendly relations in accordance with the UN Charter, including the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.

Furthermore, the governments of Armenia and Pakistan agreed to exchange representatives and provide each other with the necessary assistance to establish diplomatic relations based on reciprocity in accordance with the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations and generally accepted international practice.
