YEREVAN, September 3. /ARKA/. The EU's proposed temporary tariff waiver for a significant portion of Armenian exports will create new opportunities for Armenia, stated Vasilis Maragos, Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, speaking at the Armenian-Turkish Business Forum in Yerevan.
"Two months ago, the European Commission presented a proposal to introduce a preferential regime for the export of Armenian products to the EU for a transitional period of two years. We call this an autonomous trade measure. This means that the European Union will abolish tariffs on exports from Armenia," Maragos said, speaking at the Armenian-Turkish Business Forum in Yerevan on Thursday.
He recalled that the previous day, EU member states in the Council had approved the Commission's proposal unchanged.
"This is a very important signal, and we also expect the European Parliament's approval in the coming days. “Therefore, I would say this is a very important new opportunity, particularly for our Armenian friends,” Maragos noted.
According to him, the EU expects these measures to have a positive impact on Armenia.
On Trade Liberalization
The EU Council supported the European Commission's proposal to temporarily liberalize trade with Armenia. These measures are intended to support the Armenian economy following Russia's recently imposed trade restrictions, which disrupted Armenian exports and transit routes, according to the EU Council website.
The proposed measures envisage liberalization of approximately 80% of Armenian exports to the EU. Moreover, the preferential treatment will be subject to certain conditions and will include safeguards for the EU market in the event that imports negatively impact European producers.
The Council approved the Commission's proposal without amendments, paving the way for the swift adoption of the relevant regulation after the European Parliament is expected to also approve the proposal without amendments.
