Armenia's solar energy expansion will require investments in grid and storage systems: IMF report

YEREVAN, September 4. /ARKA/. Further expansion of solar energy in Armenia will require investments in grid infrastructure and energy storage systems, according to the International Monetary Fund's "Armenia: Climate Policy Diagnostic - July 2026" report, published on September 3, 2026.

The IMF notes that Armenia remains dependent on imported fossil fuels despite the rapid development of solar energy.

According to the Fund, further deployment of solar generation will require investments in grid infrastructure and energy storage.

The IMF prioritizes setting more ambitious targets for solar energy and storage systems, introducing incentives for projects that combine solar generation with storage systems, and improving the regulatory framework for energy storage services.

Furthermore, the Fund recommends reforming tariffs to incentivize electricity consumption during periods of high renewable energy generation.

The IMF forecasts Armenia's economic growth to be 5.3% in 2026 and 5.5% in 2027, with annual growth of approximately 5% thereafter. The IMF emphasizes that to maintain long-term growth, the country needs to continue structural reforms and expand access to financing.
