YEREVAN, June 4. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Thursday, the Armenian government approved a proposal to sign a grant agreement with the French Development Agency (AFD) for €12 million. The funds will be used for the "Integrated Development of the Water and Agricultural Sectors of Armenia" program.
According to the rationale for the decision, the agreement provides for improving water resource management, restoring and modernizing drinking and irrigation water supply infrastructure, and strengthening the sector's institutional capacity.
The program includes two interrelated components. The first is an investment component for developing water infrastructure at the national level. It will co-finance the World Bank's Water Supply and Irrigation Services Improvement (WISE) program.
The second component will be implemented locally in the Syunik region. Specifically, the program includes the phased restoration and modernization of irrigation systems in the communities of Sisian, Goris, and Meghri, the development of gravity irrigation systems, the modernization of pumping stations, and the introduction of water reuse systems.
