YEREVAN, April 21. /ARKA/. At a meeting on Tuesday, the Yerevan Council of Elders approved the allocation of 172 million drams (over $460,000) for the creation of a recreational area in the Hrazdan Gorge area.
According to Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, the project is part of the overall concept for the redevelopment of the Hrazdan Gorge. He stated that construction will begin soon, and the contractor has already been selected.
"With the assistance of our partners from the Asian Development Bank, a concept for the redevelopment of the entire gorge has been developed, including various components. This program is also part of this concept, within which three programs are planned to be launched in the near future," Avinyan said.
According to him, the first program involves the creation of pedestrian and bicycle paths, partially financed by private partners.
The second concerns the development of related infrastructure, including services for sports complex visitors.
The third program envisages the creation of water sports infrastructure.
The project will be implemented on a site in the Arabkir administrative district, located 5.5 km from the entrance to the Hrazdan Gorge.
The program includes landscaping the gorge, creating a new landscape, and creating a park and recreational areas, venues for cultural and sporting events, an open-air cinema, and a cafe.
Previously, plans were also announced to grant the Hrazdan Gorge a special status and transform it into a recreational zone. The area faces environmental problems related to wastewater discharge into the river and the accumulation of garbage.
