YEREVAN, February 13. /ARKA/. Starting January 1, 2027, Armenia plans to ban the sale of single-use plastic bags, as well as their use in retail and catering establishments.
The National Assembly of Armenia adopted the corresponding amendments to the RA Law "On Trade and Services" and several related laws in the first reading at its session on Friday.
The ban is also expected to apply to mobile vending machines, fairs, and retail outlets. Exceptions will be bags used for weighing and packaging goods, as well as garbage bags made from recycled materials.
Furthermore, the ban will apply to plastic bags with a density greater than 50 microns. Reusable paper and fabric bags are being considered as an alternative.
The amendments also ban the sale and use of disposable plastic and polystyrene foam containers and utensils in the specified facilities.
Business entities violating the bans will be subject to administrative penalties: a warning for a first offense, and a fine of 100,000 to 150,000 drams for repeat offenses. Currently, the fine ranges from 30,000 to 100,000 drams.
Starting January 1, 2022, Armenia has banned the use of polyethylene bags up to 50 microns thick in retail establishments, with the exception of recycled bags used for weighing goods.
