New Chairman of Armenia's Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee Appointed

The Armenian government has appointed Khachatur Khachikyan as Chairman of the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee.
YEREVAN, September 3. /ARKA/. The Armenian government has appointed Khachatur Khachikyan as Chairman of the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee.
At a government meeting on September 3, RA Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that Khachikyan had served as Acting Chairman of the Committee for a long time.
"Over the past eight years, we have successfully collaborated with our colleagues, members of the government. Assuming the position of Chairman of the Committee, I am prepared to apply the same energy to enhance the security and well-being of the Republic of Armenia," Khachikyan said.
Since August 2018, Khachikyan served as Deputy Chairman of the Committee.
The Nuclear Safety Regulatory Committee carries out state regulation and oversight of the use of nuclear energy in Armenia. Its responsibilities include the safety of nuclear installations, radioactive waste management, and the use of ionizing radiation sources.
One of the Committee's key areas of work is overseeing the safe operation of Unit 2 of the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant, whose service life is planned to be extended until 2036. At the same time, Armenia is working to select a design for a new nuclear power unit.
