YEREVAN, April 18. /ARKA/. Construction of the unfinished section of the North-South Highway, from Babajanyan Street to Ashtarak Highway, will begin in Yerevan in 1-1.5 months, Mayor Tigran Avinyan announced.

"We plan to complete the construction as quickly as possible," Avinyan said at a government meeting on Saturday, adding that the completion date will be announced later.

Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia Kristine Galechyan stated that a 5.8 km section of the Babajanyan-Ashtarak Highway in Yerevan has an unfinished section (270 meters) and an access road (110 meters).

"Construction of this section, as per the previously signed contract, was not fully implemented. This was due to legal disputes over the alienation of property located in the road construction area. As a result of the court's restrictions, a ban was imposed on any activity regarding this property," said Galechyan.

According to her, the ban has now been lifted through the Ministry's mediation, and there is a need for immediate construction work.

"The start of construction on the unfinished section of the road will require a review and examination of the design and estimate documentation. The current designs and design solutions were drawn up and approved back in 2015-2016, and over the years, various physical and engineering changes have occurred in this area," said Galechyan.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized the importance of this project.

"We are talking about the section on Sheram Street. The time has come to implement this project as quickly as possible," Pashinyan noted.

About the North-South Corridor

The 556-kilometer North-South Transport Corridor passes through Armenia along the Meghri-Kapan-Goris-Yerevan-Ashtarak-Gyumri-Bavra route and connects with the Georgian road network leading to the Black Sea ports of Poti and Batumi, and then on to Russia, the CIS countries, and the European Union.

The project aims to improve transport links along the Europe-Caucasus-Asia route at the junction of Western Asia and Eastern Europe.
