Deputy Armenian minister of agriculture, Samvel Galstyan, said today the ministry was ordered by the government to look into the causes of why thousands of hectares of arable land are not cultivated by their owners.
YEREVAN, November 8. / ARKA /. Deputy Armenian minister of agriculture, Samvel Galstyan, said today the ministry was ordered by the government to look into the causes of why thousands of hectares of arable land are not cultivated by their owners.

He said there are about 448,000 hectares of arable land in Armenia, but only some 300,000 hectares are cultivated. He said one of the reasons is that many farmers stopped cultivating wheat several years ago, however, this year the land under wheat increased by 12% reaching 100,000 hectares.

"Last year our agriculture suffered serious losses, and to avoid similar situations in future the government has taken several measures that have been effective", said Galstyan.

According to official numbers, in 2010 Armenian agriculture declined by 12.5%.
The deputy minister said the next step in solving agricultural problems will be the rehabilitation of unused land, as well as the creation of favorable conditions for farmers to cultivate new land. -0-
