Pashinyan: Anonymous social media accounts in Armenia could be banned by law

The initiative was voiced yesterday in the National Assembly during a discussion of the government's program for 2026-2031, approved on August 20.
MP Harutyun Harutyunyan, a member of parliament from the Strong Armenia opposition faction, drew attention to a provision in the government's program that calls for comprehensive measures to early identify, prevent, and control external information manipulation.
"We all see that numerous fakes, a so-called 'fake factory,' have been operating within Armenia in recent decades. What internal measures have been taken and are planned to identify the main culprit and the main fake in this country?" the MP asked.
In response, Pashinyan proposed involving both opposition parliamentary factions in the discussion.
"I propose that the two opposition factions discuss the possibility of creating a working group. If possible, let's pass a law," Pashinyan said yesterday in parliament during a discussion of the government's program for 2026-2031, approved on August 20.
According to the prime minister, a mechanism could be envisioned at the legislative level whereby Armenian citizens would be able to create social media profiles only after undergoing identification.
"We'll form a consensus and tell social media that fakes are prohibited in our country. Then we'll see who's interested in fakes and who's not," Pashinyan said.
