YEREVAN, August 14. /ARКА/. The Estonian government has opted to back a proposed EU regulation that would grant temporary trade preferences for goods originating from Armenia entering the EU market, as reported by the Estonian Public Broadcaster ERR.

The proposal outlines plans for temporary trade liberalization measures with Armenia over a two-year period. These measures aim to ease access for Armenian products to the European market and encourage the diversification of the country's export destinations.

Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna mentioned that Tallinn is contemplating these preferences as a means to assist Armenia amid restrictions on certain Armenian goods being supplied to the Russian market.

"In this context, Estonia believes it is appropriate for the EU to explore ways to support Armenia," ERR quoted Tsahkna as saying.

The European Commission had previously indicated that the autonomous trade measures for Armenia would allow for the liberalization of around 80% of Armenian exports to the EU.

During the inaugural Armenia-EU summit in May 2026, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing the diversification of Armenian exports and increasing the range of products supplied to the European market.

Russia has imposed a ban on the import of all quarantine products that originate from and are shipped from Armenia, as well as their transit through Russia to other EAEU member countries. The restrictions specifically affect mineral water, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, vegetables, fruits, greens, fish, and fish products.

In response to this situation, Armenian authorities have enhanced support measures for exporters by covering transportation costs and customs duties for the export of fruits, vegetables, and flowers to the EU, the UK, and Canada. Additionally, they are offering subsidies for various export goods. The list of subsidized items includes certain beverages, dried fruits and vegetables, and fish such as trout and sturgeon.
