Armenia to introduce electronic system for managing truck queues at checkpoints

YEREVAN, February 4. /ARKA/. Armenia is preparing to roll out an electronic system aimed at managing truck queues at its border checkpoints, announced Hamlet Sahakyan, the Deputy Head of the State Revenue Committee.

During a meeting on Wednesday, the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs approved a draft law in its first reading that amends the Law "On Customs Regulation."

"This system will be put into place for trucks departing from the country. Initially, it will be launched at the northern and southern checkpoints, which experience higher traffic," Sahakyan explained during the committee meeting, noting that they have studied the implementation of similar systems in the EU and Georgia.

He mentioned that a survey conducted among 45 businesses involved in freight transportation revealed that 87% of respondents frequently encounter traffic jams at checkpoints, 62% reported that it takes about three hours to navigate through the queue, and 73% expressed the need for paid parking facilities for trucks near the checkpoints.

The Deputy Head of the State Revenue Committee emphasized that to tackle this issue, the proposal includes establishing paid parking zones no more than 20 km from the checkpoints.

These zones will feature an automated electronic queue management system designed to monitor and log truck movements and issue entry permits. Sahakyan highlighted that this initiative is anticipated to alleviate congestion by ensuring that information regarding trucks, cargo, and necessary control procedures is communicated to the checkpoints.-0-
