YEREVAN, February 3. /ARКА/. The Armenian government has determined that the upcoming nuclear power plant will be modular, although the specific model has yet to be finalized, according to RA Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan.

"It has been decided that the new nuclear power plant should be modular. We are still evaluating proposals, including those from partners in Russia, the United States, China, South Korea, and France. The final decision regarding the model will be made in 2026-2027," the minister stated during a press conference reviewing the outcomes of 2025.

He emphasized that there is no urgency in making this decision. Khudatyan mentioned that the selection of a partner country will occur after the model is chosen. He also pointed out that modular nuclear power plant technologies are not yet widely adopted and require further research, which is currently in progress.

Previously, US President Donald Trump announced that Vice President J.D. Vance is scheduled to visit Armenia in February to finalize an "excellent agreement on peaceful nuclear cooperation."

About the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant (ANPP) is the sole nuclear power facility in the South Caucasus region. It is situated near the town of Metsamor, roughly 30 km west of Yerevan. The plant serves as one of the primary sources of electricity for the country, contributing up to 40% of its total energy output.

The operational lifespan of the current power unit has been extended until 2026, and efforts are underway to prolong it for an additional 10 years.-0-
