‘We do not have artificial monopolies in Armenia any longer, but there are companies that dominate some sectors of the local market,’ the head of the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) Artak Shaboyan said on Thursday.
YEREVAN, November 2. /ARKA/. ‘We do not have artificial monopolies in Armenia any longer, but there are companies that dominate some sectors of the local market,’ the head of the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition (SCPEC) Artak Shaboyan said on Thursday.
He said there is no company that controls 100% of a commodity market. ‘There are dominant companies around the world and the law does not prohibit it,” Shaboyan said.
According to him, in many cases the dominant position may be due to objective factors, resulting from effective management and efficient use of resources, and so on. He said in terms of competition, the question of whether there are obstacles to entering the markets is more important.
As an example he cited the local sugar market which has about 100 entrepreneurs, all engaged in import of sugar, including the Alex Holding Company that previously produced also sugar.
He said over the past 3-4 months the number of importers, especially from Russia, and the volume of imports increased significantly, while the share of Alex Holding in the market has dropped from 98% to 78%. -0-
