YEREVAN, January 30. /ARКА/. Armenia's prison staff will have their wages increased by 30%, Justice Minister Rustam Badasyan said during a government meeting on Thursday. He said this issue had been discussed in detail last year when there were 170 correctional officer vacancies. He said as of January 2020, there were still 125 vacancies.
According to the minister, mid-level officers are considered the most vulnerable both from the point of view of corruption risks and the fight against criminal subcultures. He said discussions have shown that their wages can be increased to attract new high-quality personnel and provide them with social guarantees, and also create favorable working conditions.
He said the measure would require additionally more than 1.5 billion drams. According to him, today a mid-level prison employee receives a wage of 150 thousand drams, although his job is the most risky, while the head of a correctional facility with 20 years of service receives 317,940 drams and a bonus of 411,372 drams.
For his part, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan noted that such decisions indicate a comprehensive approach of the government.
"If we are fighting a criminal subculture, then the law enforcement system should work in this direction efficiently and raising salaries is an important element of that fight," Pashinyan said.
"By our decision, we are creating new jobs. On the one hand, we are talking about streamlining the state administration system and, therefore, in this direction we should continue to take such steps," Pashinyan said.
According to him, all decisions should be financed through redistribution of budget funds with the expectation that additional budget revenues will be collected by the end of the year.
"Redistribution is also possible at the expense of other expenses, for example, we have already reached agreements with various international structures on the provision of loans to the tune of $1.3 billion. Therefore, not a single program will be left without financing," Pashinyan said. ($ 1 - 478.87 drams). --0--
