YEREVAN, May 12. /ARKA/. Mikhail Kalugin, Director of the Fourth Department of the CIS Countries at the Russian Foreign Ministry, stated that Yerevan's "so-called European path" could lead to systemic changes in relations with Moscow.

In an interview with TASS, the diplomat was asked to comment on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk's statement that Armenia has come too close to the point where Russia will have to restructure its relations with the country.

"The statement by Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk, which you noted, is an example of the signals we have conveyed and continue to convey to the Armenian leadership and public at various levels," Kalugin said.

According to him, citizens of both countries should be aware that "Yerevan's advancement along the so-called European path could at some point lead to systemic changes in Russian-Armenian relations."

Kalugin also stated that, in Moscow's view, the EU does not offer Armenia a "coherent alternative" in matters of security, economic stability, and prosperity.

He asserts that Brussels' interest is not rooted in "concern for Armenia or the countries of the South Caucasus," but in addressing its own geopolitical challenges.

Armenia-EU: Key Points

On March 26, 2025, the Armenian parliament approved a law on the country's accession to the European Union. The document was signed by the president on April 4.

On December 2, 2025, in Brussels, the parties approved the strategic agenda for the Armenia-EU partnership. Yerevan stated that this agenda focuses on supporting the country's sovereignty, territorial integrity, democratic reforms, and economic sustainability.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan emphasized that Armenia is moving toward EU standards while maintaining its membership in the EAEU. He stated that if combining both approaches becomes impossible, the next choice will be made together with the country's citizens.
