Armenia to introduce mandatory ID cards for citizens aged 16 and over

YEREVAN, May 11. /ARKA/. At an extraordinary session on Monday, the National Assembly of Armenia adopted the law "On Identity Documents" and a package of related laws in the second and final reading.
The law aims to create the legal conditions for the implementation of a new biometric system in Armenia.
"Having an ID card will become mandatory for individuals aged 16 and over. Individuals aged 6-16 will be able to obtain an ID card on a voluntary basis, and for children under 6, a birth certificate will be considered an identity document," said Armenian Interior Minister Arpine Sargsyan.
According to her, ID cards are currently issued only to citizens aged 16 and over.
The minister noted that, according to the logic of the law, all travel documents will comply with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization.
The package also stipulates that all documents for foreign citizens must contain biometric data.
