Armenia Wants To Set Up Joint Customs Points With Georgia

During a Monday meeting with visiting Georgian economy and sustainable development minister Vera Kobelia Armenian prime minister Tigran Sargsyan said his government would like to discuss creation of joint customs check points.
YEREVAN, November 8. / ARKA /. During a Monday meeting with visiting Georgian economy and sustainable development minister Vera Kobelia Armenian prime minister Tigran Sargsyan said his government would like to discuss creation of joint customs check points. He said this question could be discussed at the next meting of Armenian-Georgian commission for economic cooperation, scheduled for November 17-18 in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Sargsyan was quoted by the government press office as saying that establishment of joint customs points would facilitate the process of customs clearance, border crossing in both directions and help also resolve many other issues.

"We view Georgia and Armenia in the same economic field. We need to eliminate any obstacles hindering trade turnover, because that stems from the interests of our peoples," Sargsyan said.

He said also over the next two years the EU will invest about 42 million euros in upgrading three crossing points on the Armenian-Georgian border to make them comply with European standards.

The process of reconstruction of three border checkpoint on the Armenian-Georgian border - in Bagratashen, Bavra and Gogavan is scheduled to begin in November this year. Minister Kobalia expressed hope that the next meeting of the intergovernmental commission in Tbilisi will discuss the implementation of new joint programs.

The two sides also discussed the construction of the highway from Armenian Meghri to Georgian Batumi that will allow to shorten by 180 km the motor travel from Iran to the Black Sea.—0—
