Armenia's membership in EAEU may lose its meaning - Tunyan
YEREVAN, July 10. /ARKA/. If the current situation persists, Armenia's membership in the EAEU may lose its meaning, thinks Babken Tunyan, Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Economic Affairs.

"Our main benefit from EAEU membership was access to the market that was opening up to us. Until 2013, Armenia had no plans to join the EAEU, but then the decision was made to join. The main argument was that a huge market was opening up for us," he said on Armenian Public Television.

According to Tunyan, if this market is now closing for Armenia, and at the same time, EAEU regulations regarding certain types of goods are "tying our hands," then the advisability of continued membership naturally arises. "If we are truly dealing with targeted political sanctions, this means that Armenia's membership in the EAEU is already meaningless," Tunyan emphasized.

The MP thinks this question is not rhetorical.

"While in some cases, what's happening can still be explained by technical reasons, it remains unclear why, for example, the European market, which has stricter requirements, accepts certain types of Armenian products, while the EAEU market does not," Tunyan said.

He stated that at one time, Armenia was asked, and perhaps even forced, to join the EAEU.

"Now, if roads are closed to us, there are two solutions: either accept it or find alternative routes for exporting these goods. Whether it's EU countries or other states, such steps are already being taken. One way or another, Armenia must diversify its export markets," Tunyan noted.
