YEREVAN, March 2. /ARKA/. The overproduction of eggs in Armenia may prompt construction of an egg processing plant, Gegham Gevorgyan, the chairman of the state commission for the protection of economic competition, told reporters on Monday.
He said the sudden drop of egg prices made the regulator initiate a study to find out if there was an anti-competitive agreement or abuse of a dominant position in the egg market.
"Our study did not show large overproduction. That was in fact the first recorded surplus of eggs in the market since 2018," Gevorgyan said.
According to him, the overproduction resulted from decreased mortality rate among chickens from various diseases and another stimulating factor was the favorable weather.
“If our fears that some companies used dumping are true, we will hold them accountable. If the fears are not grounded, that will mean that production is on the rise. Moreover, negotiations are being held with the Ministry of Economy to build an egg processing plant," said Gevorgyan.
The prices of eggs have declined up to 20-25 drams per 1 piece. –0--
