Russian-Armenian commission discusses modernization of Armenian nuclear power plant
YEREVAN, December 26. /ARKA/. Russia's capital city Moscow hosted today the tenth meeting of a joint Russian-Armenian commission set up to coordinate a project designed to modernize and extend the service life of the second power unit of the Armenian nuclear power plant in Metsamor, the press service of the Russian Rusatom Service told ARKA.

It said the Russian delegation was led by First Deputy CEO of Rosatom State Atomic Corporation Kirill Komarov, and the Armenian delegation was led by Deputy Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures Hakob Vardanyan.

The Armenian and Russian sides positively assessed the work done as part of an agreement between the governments of Russia and Armenia on cooperation in extending the service life of the second power unit of the ANPP,  dated December 20, 2014.

The parties noted also the unprecedented amount of work done in a short period of time as part of scheduled preventive repairs without stopping the operation of the power unit.

The work done in 2019 includes improvement of the facility's safety, a comprehensive modernization and replacement of equipment in the machine room, the completion of design of systems and equipment to be modernized and replaced, and delivery of part of the  necessary equipment.

The modernization of the plant currently underway will raise the level of its safety in accordance with international requirements, as well as increase its efficiency. The commission discussed also an action plan for 2020-2021.

The Armenian Nuclear Power Plant is located some 30 kilometers west of Yerevan. It was built in the 1970s but was closed following a devastating earthquake in 1988. One of its two VVER 440-V230 light-water reactors was reactivated in 1995.

In March 2014, Armenian government decided to extend the plant’s service life up to 2026 because of delay in building a new unit. The service life extension has become possible thanks to Russia’s financial resources. The country provided $270 million to Armenia as a loan and $30 million as a grant.

The Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom is a global technological leader. It is handling the project designed to extend the service life of the 2nd power unit of the Armenian NPP. Rosatom also supplies fuel for the nuclear power plant and implements joint projects in the fields of healthcare, education and training of specialists for the Armenian nuclear power industry. -0-
