Armenian officers thwart attempts to bring in large quantities of narcotics
YEREVAN, October 31 /ARKA/. The Ant-Smuggling Department of Armenia’s State Revenue Committee tracked down a group of drug dealers selling the drugs through social networks, the head of the department, Vardan Vardanyan, told a news conference today.

He said the department officers have discovered 600 grams of hashish and 20 grams of methylenedioxymethamphetamine, best known on the street as "Ecstasy.  He said the group was tracked down as a result of effective cooperation with the National Security Service and the police.

Vardanyan explained that a large amount of narcotic and psychotropic substances were found in postal parcels. He said there were attempts to bring e-cigarettes containing hashish oil from the USA, and tablets containing narcotic and psychotropic substances from Europe.

Vardanyan reminded that sending any medical preparations by mail  is strictly prohibited and called on the citizens of Armenia to inform their relatives living abroad.

He said this year the State Revenue Committee officers thwarted attempts to bring in over 4 kg of cocaine, 2 kg of opium, 4 kg of marijuana, 3 grams of methadone, 0.5 kg of heroin, 6 grams of hashish, 290 pieces of cigarettes containing hashish oil. At the same time, the officers prevented the export of 8 kg of opium, more than 13 kg of methamphetamine.

He said immediately after a statement made by the Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan that the southern province of Syunik bordering Iran is used for drug trafficking, the head of the State Revenue Committee ordered to create a task force to strengthen control of the checkpoints on the borders of Armenia.

On October 19, Pashinyan said that large quantities of drugs are coming from Iran through the Syunik region and he intends to “break the backbone” of drug trafficking.

According to Vardanyan, operative measures bring their effective results. Thus, an Armenian citizen had been detained the night before, trying to bring in about 52 grams of opium from Iran.  He said there are no practical contacts with Iranian partners at the moment, but that they are  trying to establish cooperation with Iranian peers to curb drug trafficking. –0-
