YEREVAN, December 22. /ARKA/. The Council of Elders - the legislative body of Armenian capital Yerevan - voted today for appointment of Gayane Melkomyan as vice-mayor of the capital. The UK Manchester-born Melkomyan became the first woman to hold this position. She will oversee education, culture and gardening issues.

Before voting, some members of the Council of Elders expressed doubt that she possesses the knowledge and experience in the areas, which she is going to oversee, including due to the lack of specialized education. In response, she noted that each of the vice-mayors coordinates several areas at once and it is difficult to find a person who is specialized in all of them.

“For me, the main thing is correct management, identification of problems and tasks and the way to solve them. Employees of the relevant departments of the mayor's office can help to solve specialized issues,” Melkomyan said.
Gayane Melkomyan was born in 1987 in Manchester, UK. In 2007 she graduated with honors from the Faculty of Law of the French University of Armenia. She holds a Master of Law s.

She had her internship at the Secretariat of the International Commercial Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, as well as at various international organizations, and then at government agencies. She is a Member of the Board of Trustees of the eHealth Foundation. She was elected a member of the Council of Elders of Yerevan from the “My Step” faction in 2018 September. She is non-partisan, married.

Gayane Melkomyan has replaced Tigran Virabyan who resigned to take a job at the Public Television. Virabyan served as vice mayor of the Armenian capital since October 29, 2018.

During today's meeting, Hayk Tsirunyan, Arsen Karapetyan and Mesrop Papikyan from the “My Step” faction, who had resigned earlier, were replaced with Sergey Gezalyan, Vaha Ohanjanyan and Gevork Ajemyan. Sergey Gezalyan and Ernest Avanesov announced their withdrawal from the faction, but retained their mandates. -0-
