Armenian government promises support to private travel companies

Armenia’s economic development and investment minister Suren Karayan promised today the government’s support to privately-owned travel companies saying the government attaches special importance to cooperation with the private sector in the field of tourism during a meeting with members of the Union of Inbound Tour Operators.

Armenia’s economic development and investment minister Suren Karayan promised today the government’s support to privately-owned travel companies saying the government attaches special importance to cooperation with the private sector in the field of tourism during a meeting with members of the Union of Inbound Tour Operators.
"We are ready for cooperation and to support the sector in any format. We are going to be very aggressive in giving a fresh boost to this sector. Over these six weeks of my job as minister I came to realize that we have sufficient capacity in the tourism sector, which develops very slowly or does not develop at all, "- Karayan said. The minister proposed that such meetings be held on a monthly basis.
According to Zarmine Zeytuntsyan, the recently appointed head of the State Committee for Tourism, the goal of the meeting is to identify the problems of the tourism industry, because only through cooperation the sides can improve it.
‘The aim is not only to bring more tourists. We want to have a tourism industry that will ensure sustainable economic development,"- Zeytuntsyan said.
According to official figures, over 501,000 foreign tourists visited Armenia in the first six months of the year, a 2.4% rise from the same time span of the past year. The government expects their number to surge to 1.4 million by the end of the year. -0-
