YEREVAN, October 23. /ARKA/. The Foundation for Armenian Science and Technology (FAST) is launching a scholarship program worth $200,000, FAST Executive Director Armen Orujyan said on Monday. He said the scholarship will be given to talented post-graduate students, who are citizens of Armenia and to applicants who intend to conduct research to obtain a scientific degree in one of the Armenian universities in physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry or engineering.

He said scholarships will be awarded from the 2018-2019 academic year for three years, but students will be required to annually confirm their qualification for scholarship. He noted that at the initial stage, five scholarships will be awarded, each amounting to $7 thousand and 25 partial scholarships to the tune of $3.5 thousand.

According to him, there are also 10 full scholarships for women post-graduate students and applicants, each to the tune of $7 thousand, to stimulate the involvement of women in science. According to the latest data for 2015, the ratio of scientists among women and men in Armenia was 30 to 70.

"We want to encourage Armenian students to pursue scientific research so that they continue their studies in science and not be forced to look for work to pay their tuition fees. The scholarship will allow them to raise their level of knowledge, if necessary, to acquire additional skills abroad, and then practice it in Armenia,’ Orujyan said, stressing that the program includes mechanisms that exclude "brain drain”.

At the same time, he noted that the Foundation plans to further develop its activities, in particular, to assist not only young scientists, but also the faculty to ensure a high educational level and the introduction of new technologies.

The Foundation for Armenian Science and Technology (FAST) launched in 2016 aims at building an ecosystem that drives technological innovation and scientific advancement in Armenia and beyond. FAST intends to mobilize the scientific, technological, and financial resources of the Armenian and international communities.

FAST is co-founded by Ruben Vardanyan and Noubar Afeyan on behalf of the IDeA Foundation; Fr. Mesrop Aramyan on behalf of the “Ayb” and “Luys” foundations, and high tech and innovations entrepreneur Artur Alaverdyan. -0-
