YEREVAN, November 28. /ARKA/. Armenia possesses considerable potential for production of clean energy, USAID/Armenia Mission Director John Allelo said today on the margins of Energy Week 2023 in Yerevan.

According to him, this potential is primarily in the areas of solar energy and energy efficiency. He said using these resources will not only reduce the country’s dependence on other countries for fuel, but will also be consistent with Armenia's democratic reforms, promote climate resilience and efficiency.

Speaking to reporters, Allelo emphasized that USAID's goal is to make Armenia’s energy sector stronger, more sustainable and independent.

"Energy is the most important sector of any country's economy. Through independence in the energy sector, a country's sovereignty can be strengthened," he noted.

Speaking about Armenia, Allelo noted that one of the most important problems is the issue of independence, as today some 70% of Armenia's energy system depends on imported energy resources.

He said if Armenia is able to produce more of its own energy, it will also mean even more independence and sovereignty.

According to the National Statistical Committee, Armenian power-generating facilities produced about 7 billion kWh of electricity in the first nine months of 2023, up from over 6.5 billion kWh produced in the same period of 2022

Thermal power plants accounted for 52.5% of the total output, hydropower plants share was 22.6%, the Armenian NPP produced 19.6%, while the share of solar power plants was 5.3% and that of wind power plants was 0.02%. -0-
