YEREVAN, June 28. /ARKA/. Judging by the outcome of the first stage of unified high school graduation examinations, which are also university entrance qualification exams, the Yerevan State University (YSU) remains the most popular higher education establishment in Armenia among university applicants.

According to Gagik Melikyan, the head of Testing and Evaluation Center, out of 11,375 applicants some 3,200 have applied for YSU.

Melikyan said compared to 2015 the number of applications to the University of Economics has decreased, while the number of applicants to the Pedagogical University, the National Polytechnic University of Armenia and the Russian-Armenian (Slavic) University has increased.

He said 6,266 school leavers have passed already the Armenian language and literature exams and another 5,328 the Mathematics exam.

"As for foreign languages, the bulk of school leavers choose English. Six students chose Spanish, one - Italian, and no one Persian. This is a cause of concern because Armenia needs not only English language experts, but also experts speaking Persian, French, Italian and other languages,’said Melikyan.

He added that the average score in foreign languages is higher than in other subjects, but the number of students who choose Russian language is reducing every year. He said about 33% of entrants failed the Russian language exam, 20% failed the Physics exam and 16% the biology exam.

The first phase of the exams ran from 3 to 24 June at 30 examination centers in Armenia, 10 of which were in Yerevan.

The second stage will last from 2 to 8 July. All those school leavers who could not have their exams in the first stage for various reasons as well as foreign nationals, graduates of specialized institutions (schools, colleges) and demobilized citizens can take part in it. -0--
