Yerevan public transport to cost 880-900 drams daily from January 1
YEREVAN, November 14. /ARKA/. A table with new public transport fares starting January 1, 2025, is circulating on Armenian social media. According to the table, the daily travel pass will cost 880 drams, the weekly pass will be 4800 drams, the monthly pass will be 8800 drams, a 90-day pass will cost 23,600 drams, and the annual pass (365 days) will be priced at 88,800 drams.
In an interview with the Public Television of Armenia, Yerevan's Vice-Mayor Suren Grigoryan confirmed that, starting January 1, it will be possible to purchase an online travel pass for 800 drams, allowing for virtually unlimited trips throughout the day.
"The only reasonable limitation is the number of trips—8-9 per day. This is to prevent fraud, such as ticket cloning, ensuring that one ticket is not used by multiple people. Otherwise, a responsible passenger will be able to use the ticket virtually unlimited times," Grigoryan explained.
As the vice-mayor stated, the specified fare packages are intended for city residents who rarely use public transport, or for tourists.
"According to our studies, it is reasonable to assume that they will not often use the standard packages that our citizens will use every day. The standard packages include the monthly, three-month, and annual options," Grigoryan said.
The issue of citizens living outside Yerevan but regularly coming to the capital on business for a period of time was raised. Regarding this, the vice-mayor considered that paying 880 drams for one day is not such a huge expense to be an unbearable burden.
Grigoryan explained the new prices by the need to reduce subsidies for public transport. "If this year we subsidized transport by 8.5 billion drams, purchased 171 new buses, each 8.5 meters long, and plan to buy another 250 buses, each 18 meters long, then these expenses will increase. We explain that it is impossible to allocate such large sums to transport, especially considering that the city has to fund thousands of other needs," the vice-mayor said.
He emphasized that the mayor's office is not rejecting subsidies for public transport, but it is unreasonable to spend such large sums of money on these purposes, given that there are many other equally important areas that require funding — such as landscaping, updating road markings, repairing kindergartens, and others. "We used to pay 100 drams for trips on minibuses, but now this is no longer possible, " Grigoryan said.
The vice-mayor added that benefits for certain categories of Yerevan residents will soon be reviewed by the Council of Elders and will come into force before January 1.
