Yerevan plant nursery to grow 5 thousand trees a year
YEREVAN, March 18. /ARKA/. A plant nursery in Yerevan run by the municipality will grow up to 5,000 trees a year, Director of Greening and Environmental Protection municipal SNCO Armen Begoyan said at a meeting of the Yerevan Municipality on Monday.
Modern systems and equipment have already been purchased, including a pumping station, filtration system and 100 linear kilometers of drip irrigation system for the nursery that occupies an area of 20 hectares.
"The species of trees which the nursery is to grow have been selected by the Scientific and Technical Council of Yerevan," Begoyan said.
He noted that the mature trees will be planted in the streets and parks, and later they will be used to lay out forest parks on the territory of the capital.
As Begoyan noted, seedlings of wild species of trees are very cheap - in Italy they cost 1-2 euros.
"Therefore, we have chosen this option for further cultivation of young trees already on the spot. Another option involves purchasing already grafted trees. They will cost 10-30 euros each. In 2-3 years they will already have the necessary thickness and meet the standards for planting in Yerevan nurseries," he explained.
Begoyan said highly functional and valuable tree species will be used in the capital. "Almost half of the trees in Yerevan have lost or are losing their vitality. It will be necessary to replace them gradually over the next 10 years," he said. -0-
