Yerevan Municipality to tighten fight against illegal street trade
YEREVAN, June 13. /ARKA/. The Yerevan Municipality is going to tighten the fight against illegal street trade in the capital. It has developed a draft law that provides for seizure of goods sold illegally in streets.
In 2019-2022, some 3,583 illegal trade cases were registered by the city authorities and more than 80 million dram worth fines (almost $190,000) were imposed, but less than half was paid.
Street vendors, selling mostly fruits and vegetables, argue that this is their sole source of income and if they are driven from streets they will be unable to keep their families.
According to Deputy Mayor Suren Grigoryan, the Municipality warns offenders and imposes fines, but a few hours later the sellers put their goods back on the streets. He stressed that seizure of goods is an extreme step, but the only effective method for solving the problem. --0--
