YEREVAN, May 15. /ARKA/. The chief architect of Yerevan Artur Meschyan said today that the city authorities will try to attract foreign investors to build a cable railway, which is to connect a neighborhood known as Second Massif with the downtown Yerevan.

He said the investor or investors would be allowed to build a shopping center in the Second Massif and a hotel complex not far from the city center in  Abovyan Square.

Meschyan added that the territory of the former Youth Palace building had been donated to the administration of Russian St. Petersburg under a bilateral agreement, under which the Armenian side received a territory in this northern Russian city.

He said Yerevan authorities will soon meet with representatives of St. Petersburg Mayor's Office to discuss the construction of  the cable railway station on that  territory. The chief architect said also the cable railway would not be exclusively for tourists, but would become  part of the capital city’s passenger transport network. Therefore, it should have a large number of cars with more than ten seats each.

"Since the construction of the cable railway is cheaper than construction of a  metro station, we plan to start work at the end of this year," he said.

Meschyan said in the future the cable railway may be extended towards the  Victory Park in  Zeytun community.

The former cable railway built in 1967, connected the center of the city from Heratsi Street with the Nork-Marash district in the north of Yerevan, carrying about 500 passengers a day. Its operation was stopped after an accident with fatalities in 2004. --0—
