YEREVAN, February 1. /ARKA/. About 7,000 people in Armenia with various disabilities are provided with approximately 13,000 pieces of rehabilitation equipment and devices, Artur Kesoyan, the head of a department in charge of disabled people at the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, said today.

"Rehabilitation equipment and devices for people with disabilities, including prostheses and strollers are provided free,’ Kesoyan said at a press conference.

He added that all prosthetic, orthopedic and other rehabilitation equipment are provided by companies chosen through tenders.

He said contrary to previous years,  when only 6-7 types of wheelchairs or hearing aids were imported limiting the choice for people with disabilities, in 2017, the procedure changed and the ministry passed to issuing certificates to the disabled.  Now 63 types of wheelchairs are being imported. Previously, one company was selected as winner, but the last tender has chosen five suppliers.

He said  the certificate is provided directly to a person with disability along with a list of companies that have contracts with the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and offer appropriate equipment or devices.

According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, there are about 193,000 disabled people in Armenia. About 8,200 of them are people under 18 -0-
