New strain of Omicron nicknamed 'kraken' detected in Armenia

The latest strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus driving up cases of Covid-19, called XBB.1.5, and nicknamed "kraken," has been detected in Armenia, Hripsime Khachatryan, the press secretary of the Armenian Ministry of Health, told Novosti-Armenia news agency.
YEREVAN, March 31. /ARKA/. The latest strain of the SARS-CoV-2 virus driving up cases of Covid-19, called XBB.1.5, and nicknamed "kraken," has been detected in Armenia, Hripsime Khachatryan, the press secretary of the Armenian Ministry of Health, told Novosti-Armenia news agency.
She said the descendant of the Omicron variant has been detected as a result of sequencing.
According to WHO, there are currently more than 600 sub-variants of the Omicron coronavirus strain circulating worldwide, including XBB.1.5.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has called XBB.1.5 the most transmissible Omicron strain so far. But there is no evidence yet that XBB.1.5 causes more severe disease than other Omicron strains. . -0-
