More than 400 schools across Armenia need repair

More than 400 schools across Armenia are in need of repair and improvement of seismic resistance, Minister of Territorial Administration and Development Suren Papikyan said today during a discussion on education.
YEREVAN, April 2. /ARKA/. More than 400 schools across Armenia are in need of repair and improvement of seismic resistance, Minister of Territorial Administration and Development Suren Papikyan said today during a discussion on education.
He said together with the Asian Development Bank, a program is being implemented to improve the seismic resistance of schools, many of which in practice have to be built from scratch.
The minister said the government approves annually the list of schools to be included in the program, which now has 46 schools, 31 of which are scheduled to be repaired this year.
"In fact, out of 400 schools that need to be repaired, financing is available now for only 1/5, however, we plan to hold active negotiations with donors and partners to find the necessary funds to embrace the rest of schools," said Papikyan.
He also noted that in 2018 the government allocated 660 million drams for solving priority problems in schools, such as roof repair, heating expenses, etc.
The minister also said 12 schools were repaired last year by means of government -provided subventions to communities.
For his part, the head of the parliamentary standing commission on education, science, culture, Diaspora, youth and sports issues Hovhannes Hovhannisyan said the problems in the field have accumulated over the years and cannot be solved in one year.
"Many entrepreneurs in Armenia are actively building churches, which is laudable, but we propose to introduce the idea of "one entrepreneur - one school. As an example, he said the head of Tavush Textiles donated funds for the repair of a school. --0--
