YEREVAN, November 22. / ARKA /.  Forests  in a number of Armenian communities have been restored as part of the Integrated Biodiversity Management program, Ashot Giloyan, head of the Local Government Policy Department of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructures, said today.

The Integrated Biodiversity Management program has been implemented in Armenia, Georgia and Azerbaijan since 2015 with the financial support of the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ). The program's budget is 27 million euros.

From 2015 to 2019, about 200 hectares of forests have been restored in 14 communities in Shirak, Aragatsotn and Syunik provinces.

Giloyan said local residents showed particular zeal and enthusiasm, because the program increases “ green zones” in their communities. 'People are more responsible for trees, if they take part in their planting,” he said.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told the First International Forest Summit in Yerevan on October 22 that the government's planned to  plant about 500 thousand trees on an area of 140 hectares as part of a program  before  the end of the year.

The prime minister said also the government released 424 million drams ($890 thousand) for the restoration of forests. The program will create  about 1000 temporary jobs. Pashinyan also recalled the tougher punishment is envisaged for illegal logging, emphasizing that the government supports all initiatives aimed at both preserving and restoring the forests.

According to the State Real Estate Cadastre, as of July 2018, forest areas occupied 334 thousand hectares. -- 0--
