YEREVAN, November 20. /ARKA/. Armenia’s nature protection minister Artsvik Minasyan and the director of the Byurakan Observatory Areg Mikaelyan signed an agreement today on the establishment of a dendrological park in the territory of the observatory.

The idea was first voiced back in 2010. The observatory has 50 hectares of land rich in various plants and animals. To save them, it was suggested that dendrological park be created.

"The ecotourism and scientific tourism will be combined in the park to attract foreign specialists to Armenia. We expect the agreement to initiate a large process - direct participation of scientific centers in the protection of the environment," Minasyan said today after taking a stroll through the area.

The minister gave one week to the responsible departments of his ministry to develop a program of measures to that end.

There are 34 specially protected natural areas in Armenia now, which include national parks, reserves and hunting grounds. Their total area is 383,000 hectares. -0-
