Armenian lawmakers pass bill proposing early retirement to Constitutional Court members

The National Assembly of Armenia gave Wednesday its final approval to a bill amending the law on the Constitutional Court. On November 14, the Armenian government decided to allocate AMD 630 million from the government budget to propose early retirement to the current members of the Constitutional Court with a pension equal to their present salaries. The deadline for retirements on the proposed condition is January 31, 2020.
YEREVAN, December 11. /ARKA/. The National Assembly of Armenia gave Wednesday its final approval to a bill amending the law on the Constitutional Court. On November 14, the Armenian government decided to allocate AMD 630 million from the government budget to propose early retirement to the current members of the Constitutional Court with a pension equal to their present salaries. The deadline for retirements on the proposed condition is January 31, 2020.
The decision was met with a mixed reaction - some people hailed the decision saying this is the only way to settle the matter amicably, while others found this a very high price to get rid of the constitutional trouble. There are also some others who consider this as a bribe to the Constitutional Court members for resignation.
The opposition factions' MPs criticized the bill saying this move will not remedy the situation.
In response, LIlit Makunts, the head of the ruling My Step faction, called the opposition MPs not to manipulate the public opinion, and called this step as one of the ways out of the constitutional crisis.
