YEREVAN, August 6. /ARKA/. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told a Cabinet session today that his government was ready to provide assistance to Lebanon to overcome the tragic consequences of the explosion in Beirut.
“On behalf of the Armenian government, I would like to express condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to all the injured. Lebanon is among the most kindred countries, our peoples are connected by numerous historical and cultural links,” he said.
Pashinyan said Beirut was the capital of the Armenian Diaspora in the 20th century and for tens of years in a row this city has been the religious, political and cultural center of the Armenian presence in the Middle East, still retaining its exceptional importance.
“In this difficult period, we cannot remain indifferent to the needs of the fraternal people of Lebanon and the Armenian community of Lebanon. We will provide all possible support to the Lebanese government and the local Armenian community,” Pashinyan said.
He also said that a special account has been opened at the Central Bank by the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund with online platform for donations.
According to the Lebanese authorities, the explosion in the port of Beirut on Tuesday evening was caused by the detonation of 2.7 thousand tons of ammonium nitrate confiscated by customs services in 2015, stored in a warehouse.
Mourning has been declared in the country. In the city, recognized as a disaster zone, a state of emergency was introduced for two weeks. According to the latest data, the explosion killed more than 150 people, more than 4 thousand were injured and missing. --0--
