Armenia’s resident population as of October 1, 2017 dwindled by another 14,300 people from the same time span of 2016 to 2,979,600 people, according to the latest numbers, released today by the National Statistical Service (NSS).

YEREVAN, November 2. /ARKA/. Armenia’s resident population as of October 1, 2017 dwindled by another 14,300 people from the same time span of 2016 to 2,979,600 people, according to the latest numbers, released today by the National Statistical Service (NSS). Compared with January 1, 2017, the population decreased by 6,500 people. 

According to the National Statistical Service, the number of urban population at the end of September stood at 1, 898,800 people, down by 5,800 people from the year before. The Yerevan’s population was estimated at 1,076,600 people. In rural areas, the population decreased by 8,500 people to 1,080,800 people.

In January-September 2017, the number of births declined by 7.4% to 27, 655. The number of deaths in the reporting period increased by 0.65% to 20,658.

Earlier the National Statistical Service said that as of January 1, 2016, the population of Armenia was less than 3 million people for the first time since the 70s.

Armenian president Serzh Sargsyan, speaking at the first meeting of the newly elected parliament, said the population  should reach 4 million by 2040 due to a sharp improvement in the demographic situation. -0-
