Armenia's poverty rate in 2019 dropped to 23.5 percent

Citing the statistical data for 2019, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said today that the government managed to reduce poverty rate by 2.2 percentage points bringing it to 23.5%.

YEREVAN, May 6. /ARKA/. Citing the statistical data for 2019, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said today that the government managed to reduce poverty rate by 2.2 percentage points bringing it to 23.5%. 

Pashinyan was speaking in parliament presenting a report on the execution of the government's 2019 program. In his words, the level of extreme poverty decreased by 1.4 percentage points to 1%. He said eliminating the extreme poverty until 2023 is one of the promises of his My Step bloc.

'If we succeed in preserving this pace we will eliminate extreme poverty before 2023," Pashinyan said.

He said before the coronavirus crisis, Armenia had the lowest level of poverty since its independence.
Armenia's permanent population as of January 1, 2020 stood at 2,959,500 people. 

Pashinyan said also that foreign investment in January-September 2019 amounted to $2.2 billion. According to him, it was  by $465 million, or 27.2% more from the same time span in 2018 and by $635 million, or 41.3% more than in the first nine months of 2017.-0-
