Appeals court arrests General Grigory Khachaturov for two months
YEREVAN, March 16. /ARKA/. Armenia’s Criminal Court of Appeals ruled today to allow the arrest of former commander of the 3rd Army Corps General Grigory Khachaturov for two months. The news was confirmed by spokeswoman of the Armenian Prosecutor General's Office Lusine Martirosyan.
Khachaturov, who served as commander of a military unit from 2006 to 2010, is charged with legalization of property acquired by criminal means (money laundering) on a particularly large scale through abuse of official position.
According to prosecutors, the charges are based on evidence obtained by the Investigative Department of the National Security Service.
According to media stories, Khachaturov is implicated in a criminal case initiated against former Defense Minister Seyran Ohanyan, who is head of the opposition Hayastan faction in parliament. Seyran Ohanyan is accused of embezzlement on a large scale and abuse of official duties.
On February 21, Armenia's Anti-Corruption Court declined to grant prosecutors' motion for the arrest of General Grigory Khachaturov, but the Prosecutor General's Office challenged the denial at the Criminal Court of Appeals. -0-
