Yerevan residents elect new Council of Elders
YEREVAN, September 17. /ARKA/.Polling stations opened in Armenia's capital Yerevan today morning at 8 am for voters to elect a new municipal assembly- Council of Elders.
Thirteen political parties and one bloc are contesting in the elections. The party or the bloc that wins the election will nominate a candidate for the post of mayor.
Not only adult citizens of Armenia (who have been registered in the population registry of Yerevan for at least 6 months before the election day), but also some categories of foreigners (who have residence permits and have been registered in the registry for at least a year before the election day) are eligible to participate in the elections.
Residents should present either an Armenian passport (regular or biometric) or ID-card, or a Russian passport (if its holder is listed in the population registry), or an ID card of a refugee or stateless person.
The latest public opinion call conducted by the Armenian Office of Gallup International Association shows that that 22.5% of respondents in the capital Yerevan are going to vote for Civil Contract Party’s mayoral candidate Tigran Avinyan.
Another 14.3% plan to vote for Hayk Marutyan, the candidate of the National Advancement party, who already served as mayor of Yerevan. Also, 7.8% are ready to vote for the candidate from Mother Armenia bloc Andranik Tevanyan.
The outgoing Council of Elders was elected on October 10, 2018. Its term expires on October 10, 2023. --0--
