Yerevan must take into account the changing nature of the European Union, says Russian Deputy Prime Minister
YEREVAN, February 5. /ARKA/. The choice to possibly join the EU lies with the Armenian people, but Yerevan must consider the evolving nature of the European Union, which is shifting from an economic union to a military-political one, stated Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexei Overchuk during a press briefing.
"If they ever officially initiate these negotiations, it will take many years. We will, of course, need to observe the dynamics of the European Union itself and what it is evolving into. Additionally, we must keep an eye on the statements from the European Commission and Brussels today, which indicate that the European Union is transitioning from an economic union to a military-political union. This aspect must also be factored in. The nature of the European Union is changing right before our eyes," he remarked.
"At some point, certain decisions will need to be made, as this topic has been widely discussed, both here and in Armenia. Nikol Pashinyan has addressed it: everyone recognizes that Armenia cannot simultaneously be a member of two integration associations. Therefore, if such a decision is ever reached, it will be thorough, considering the dynamics we are currently witnessing in the evolving nature of the European Union," Overchuk concluded.
Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that Armenia is moving toward compliance with EU standards while maintaining membership in the EAEU. According to him, as long as this is possible, Armenia will remain a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, and when this becomes impossible, "we, together with the citizens of Armenia, will make a decision that will be dictated by the free expression of the will of the Armenian people."-0-
