US to seek suspending Russia from UN Human Rights Council
YEREVAN, April 5, /ARKA/. The United States will seek Russia's suspension from the United Nations Human Rights Council, U.S. Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Monday in an interview with the National Public Radio (NPR), TASS news agency reported.
According to the NPR, Thomas-Greenfield said she will bring the matter before the Security Council on Wednesday immediately after returning to New York, and expects the General Assembly to take up the issue as early as Thursday.
US White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told a news briefing earlier that President Joe Biden had instructed Thomas-Greenfield to seek suspension of Russia’s membership with the UN Human Rights Council.
Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said speaking at a news conference that Russia viewed West’s attempts to remove the country from the United Nations Human Rights Council as unbelievable.
He said: "This is again unprecedented and this will not facilitate or encourage or be helpful to what is happening between Russia and the Ukrainian peace talks," Nebenzia said. -0-
