Trump may nominate Marco Rubio, who voiced support for Armenia, as U.S. Secretary of State
The portal characterises Rubio as a ‘foreign policy hawk’.
In November 2023, Rubio supported the Armenian Protection Act, passed by the Senate, which provides for a ban on the US president's military-technical assistance to Azerbaijan. Rubio stated that American taxpayers' money should not go to Azerbaijan, a country that has brought instability to the region.
In April 2024, Rubio voted against providing $95bn in aid to Kiev and ‘urged Ukraine to negotiate an end to the war with Russia, even if it means Russia retains some Ukrainian territory.’ At the same time, the senator is against normalising relations with Cuba and is known for his tough stance on China, Axios writes.
CNN, which, citing informed sources, confirms Trump's plans for Rubio, notes that the senator himself is interested in potentially joining the future president's cabinet if he is offered the position.
Given his extensive foreign policy experience and the fact that he is a member of the Senate Intelligence and Foreign Relations Committees, the State Department ‘seemed like the right agency for him.’
Still, sources warned that ‘until the offer is made official, Trump may change his mind.’
Rubio, 53, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010 after serving as a member of the Florida House of Representatives from the 111th district for nearly a decade with one term as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. He also led a failed bid to seek the Republican Party's nomination for president in 2016. -0-
