The issue of Armenian-Azerbaijani peace treaty is still relevant- Peskov
YEREVAN. September 29. /ARKA/. The issue of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan is still important even after the decision to terminate the existence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic from January 1, 2024 Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said today, according to Tass news agency.
Nagorno-Karabakh president Samvel Shahramanyan signed a decree earlier this week to dissolve the government and disband the armed forces after the September 19-20 Azerbaijani military offensive.
The Russian peacekeepers' further deployment in Nagorno-Karabakh, which will cease to exist from January 1, 2024 will be a subject of discussions with Baku. Peskov said.
"No one is likely today to give an answer to this question, as now we are talking about the mission on the territory of Azerbaijan. This will be the subject of our discussion with the Azerbaijani side," Peskov said..
A total of 1,960 Russian peacekeepers were deployed in Nagorno-Karabakh under a five-year mandate after the 2020 autumn war in the conflict zone to protect the ethnic Armenian population of the region.
After the September 19-20 attack this year almost 90,000 of the region's estimated 120,000 population have already arrived in Armenia.-0-
