YEREVAN, December 29. /ARKA/. The situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, following an attempted sabotage attack by Azerbaijani troops is now calm, a spokesman for the Armenian defense ministry Artsrun Hovhannisyan said today.

Armenian defense ministry reported earlier today that Azerbaijani troops attempted a sabotage attack in the early hours of December 29 southeast of the village of Chinari in Tavush province. It said Armenian armed forces neutralized the aggressive action of Azerbaijani troops, driving them back into Azerbaijani territory.

According to Artsrun Hovhannisyan, Azerbaijan’s casualties amounted to seven servicemen.  During the fighting, three Armenian soldiers were also killed.

Meantime the Armenian ministry of foreign affairs said it is taking all the necessary steps in connection with the attempted sabotage attack by Azerbaijani troops near  the Armenian village of Chinari, a foreign ministry spokesman Tigran Balayan told the Armenian service of RFE/RL.

"Based on the situation, we are taking all the necessary steps, typical for such situations", - Balayan said in response to a question whether the Armenian foreign ministry was going to appeal to international structures. He also noted that Azerbaijan's actions defy any logic. -0-
