YEREVAN, November 13. /ARKA/. Varuzhan Avetisyan, a member of an opposition group of gunmen that seized a police station in downtown Yerevan in 2016 summer to demand the release of their jailed leader Zhirayr Sefilian and the resignation of then president Serzh Sargsyan, will top the electoral list of the Sasna Tsrer (Daredevils of Sassoun) party in the early elections to the National Assembly of Armenia,, scheduled to take place on December 9.

One police officer was killed and another fatally wounded in the assault, which was followed by large-scale protests by the armed group's supporters and other Armenians, during which one police officer was killed.

Zhirayr Sefilian, the coordinator of the Armenian opposition civil initiative Constituent Parliament, told a press conference today that the party decided to participate in the elections because its aim is ‘to carry out radical and systemic changes.’

Sefilian, a veteran of the Karabakh war, called on other veterans to support the party in the elections.
Sefilian said also that a political analyst Stepan Grigoryan is second in the party list. Grigoryan, who was also present at the news conference, said there are several reasons that prompted him to join the party’s election campaign. One of them is that members of Sasna Tsrer are honest and patriots. The second reason is the party’s statement that it abandons violence as a method of solving political issues.

The third reason is that the political program of the party includes work with Western institutions.
Currently, of 31 arrested members of the armed group that seized the police station in 2016, 28 were released from prison. One of them, Araik Khandoyan, died October 10. -0-
