YEREVAN, April 16. /ARKA/. In an interview with the Russian daily ‘Izvestia’ Armenia’s former president Serzh Sargsyan, nominated by the ruling coalition of his Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF) for the post of prime minister, said his party fellows backed the proposal of acting prime minister Karen Karapetyan to nominate him for the post. ‘I am ready to take on this responsibility," Sargsyan said.
He also said that along with his duties, if "his candidature is approved by the parliament", he would share the experience he accumulated while serving in various capacities with the younger politicians. He also explained the need to switch to a parliamentary form of government, saying the semi-presidential form of government is fraught with big threats, as it is unbalanced.
According to him, the president had a greater legal responsibility for domestic and foreign policy, national security and so on, but did not have the appropriate authority to fully implement the duties stipulated by the Constitution.
He said the shift was demanded by all political forces and that was why it was decided to balance out the political structure of the country, which now has a strong legislative power (the parliament), to which the government is fully responsible.
He noted that the parliamentary form of government suites the Armenian reality and the mentality of its people. Sargsyan added that this would allow making democratic reforms and developing the economy more rapidly. -0-
