YEREVAN, February 27. /АРКА/. The probability of signing a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2026 is not zero, said the leading researcher of the MGIMO Institute of International Studies Sergey Markedonov in an exclusive interview with the "Novosti-Armenia" news agency.

"The peace treaty and the world as such are different things. They cannot be identified. The text, which was initially initialed in August of last year, and then published, does not contain a number of essential provisions," Markedonov noted.

According to him, the document is largely based on the principles of the Helsinki Final Act of 1975 and the Paris Charter for New Europe, but in a loose paraphrase.

"One of the principles is non-interference in each other's internal affairs. A question arises. if one of the parties proposes to change the Constitution, is it an internal matter of Armenia or not? he said.

Speaking about the prospects of settlement, Markedonov expressed the opinion that the approaches of the parties to the understanding of the world may differ. As the expert noted, if we talk about the perception of the process in Baku, it is not so much about a compromise, but about a more rigid model of regulation.

"The peace that is visible from Baku is most likely not a compromise, but a dictate. Aliyev could simply remove the arguments in one fell swoop, free the Karabakh leaders, exchange or find some formulas that would allow both Pashinyan to save face, and Armenia, as a state, as a whole, and the opposition would be "ashamed". There is some kind of indicative "whip" in this gesture, Markedonov emphasized.
